Andrew Hryb, 36, of Darien, was killed on Saturday, Feb. 29, when he accidentally went off-trail at the Stowe Mountain Resort in Cambridge and fell off a cliff, Vermont State Police said.

His brother, Alexander Hyrb, 35, of Norwalk, suffered minor injuries in the incident.

According to police, the investigation into Hryb’s death determined that the pair had skied off the trail and had gone out of bounds into the woods from Stowe Mountain Resort. They then became disoriented as they attempted to find their way out of the woods.

The two traveled upwards of two miles from Sensation Quad lift at Spruce Peak through the woods before coming to an ice climbing route known as Doug's Route, police said.

It appears that Hyrb lost his footing while trying to look over the edge of the estimated 220-foot cliff and fell to his death.

The two were said to be “avid” skiers who were familiar with the Vermont resort.

Police said that the “incident has been determined to be an accident and Andrew’s injuries were consistent with having fallen from the cliff.”
